Move to a riverside village bursting with character

Shiplake, just two miles south of Henley-on-Thames is a delightful place to live with a strong sense of community.

Shiplake is comprised of three settlements – each with its own character.  Shiplake Cross, the oldest part, is the heart of the community being home to Shiplake Memorial Hall, Shiplake Village Bowling Club and Shiplake Tennis & Social Club.

Behind the name: Manor Gardens

When choosing a name for a new development, the Beechcroft team looks at the history of the site, the former site use or the geography.

Manor Gardens in Shiplake has been created on the site of the former Wyevale Garden Centre and given the site’s history, it seemed natural to retain the reference to gardens.

When it came to choosing the road names – Crispin Gardens and Walter Close – we stepped back in time and looked at historical lords of the manor.  Miles Crispin, also known as Milo of Wallingford, held the manor of Harpsden in the Anglo-Saxon period whilst Walter Giffard, the 1st Earl of Buckingham, held Harpsden/Bolney in 1102.

This area remained manorial until the 19th century, hence the name ‘Manor Gardens.’
